Re: Single Car Carport conversion to studio

I just don't really know how much isolation I really need since the whole thing is open, I can't even really test anything with the DB meter until a wall gets built. That's true: you can't test how much you are getting, but you can still determine how much isolation you need, in total. And you can ...

Re: SHORT Book List

For what it's worth, I totally agree. There is a lot of silly stuff in that book, Eric Desart and Brian Ravnaas also agreed on that. http://www.bobgolds.com/RecordingStudioDesign_PhillipNewell_Pg7.jpg Thanks Bert! It's good to know that I'm not alone in my low opinion of this book, especially when ...

Re: How To Calibrate and Use REW To Test and Tune Your Room Acoustics

Wow.. that is great.. I look forward to when I am at this point. I am correct that this is only for when you room is finished and you have placed your speakers in the softits that you can run this? I prefer to take measurements throughout the build, from as early as possible in the empty room when ...

Re: New Studio (With Measurements)

No problem! It happens... simple mix up with the tape measure, I guess? At least the mystery is solved, and we know why the measured results didn't match the predicted results! So all is good. Please post the new results when you have them. I just posted some instructions on how to do some additiona...

The "Walking Mic" test procedure

OK, one more. A not-so-usefull-but-rather-cool one. The animated graph below is the complete walk from the back wall to the front wall of the same studio as all the other graphs on this page. OK, so its not ALL the way from back wall to the front wall, because REW only allows up to 99 measurements i...

The "Walking Mic" test procedure

So why are these graphs more important? And why is the mix position at that location, rather than a bit further forward or backward? And why not just use the frequency response? Here's the real issue: The animated graph below shows the frequency response overlaid with the PHASE response. The second ...

The "Walking Mic" test procedure

... And another one: Same room, same data, but this time here's the "Spetrogram" animated gif. Same as above, it holds the first and last frame for a bit, and pauses on the "00" spot. Soundman-studio-design-forum--Walikng-mic--REW--SP2-SML.gif (Higher resolution version here) Her...

The "Walking Mic" test procedure

I'm adding an animated GIF file below, showing the changing waterfall plots for the same room that I posted the set of frequency response curves, above, from doing the "walking mic" test in a studio under construction. This is all of the waterfall plots for the locations between 18" i...

Re: Designing a new live / mixing room inside home (continued)

Hi there Jules, and a big Welcome to the new forum! Very glad you found us over here. I sure do remember you, with your strange shaped room. I've been conducting preliminary tests using a presonus PRM-1 and REW as recommended. Great! I have updated the procedure for doing REW tests, and it is here n...

Re: New Home Studio Build

Hi there Jason, and a warm welcome to the Forum! :) :thu: Glad you found us. That's a nice looking space you have there. From what I can see on the plans, it seems to be 30' long by 21'6" wide, which is nearly 650 square feet. Also, your roof seems to be nice and high: 12'4" at the walls, ...

Re: Attic Shaped Studio

A pretty big acoustic hole into the eaves - putty pads and caulk to the rescue! :ahh: The top two 2-gangs are signal cables to the DAW computer on the landing. I plan to relocate these to the outside of the speaker soffit once it is constructed. :thu: I'll be able to get putty packs onto these and ...

Re: Attic Shaped Studio

I'm still trying to catch, up with you, Jennifer! I'm up for putting some hangers in, you reckon there's enough height and space for them to be worthwhile versus just filling with light fluffy stuff? I think so, yes. I normally do a combination of treatment in soffit traps, and you'll have plenty of...

Re: New Studio (With Measurements)

Great! That makes it much easier. So, with dimensions of 11.5' x 10' x 8' , or 15' x 10' x 8', the actual results do not match the predicted results! That's strange... everything is off by a few Hertz from where it should be. For example, your first lengthwise axial mode shows up at 42.9 Hz, but acc...
