Re: Architects and churches...
Nice, you did well to deliver a useful result there. I've played venues with similarly bad acoustics, and they seemed like the longest gigs ever. Not a musical experience at all - your ears tell you nothing, or even work against you due to the awful delays. As you say it's unfortunate they didn't re...

Re: Attic Shaped Studio
I hadn't realised the mini splits could do so much, what an incredible system. I'll make sure the ventilation inlet can be easily routed above that position should the need for one arise. Thanks for the tip on using normal caulk, the brand you mention is available here. And there was me going to do ...

Re: Attic Shaped Studio
Here are some ventilation calculations for the following rough design. The calculations are copied from the approach detailed by John Steel on his thread; http://www.digistar.cl/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=19 It has been a fascinating exercise. That will allow me to refine the design. From reading...

Re: Double Garage design - East Sussex
Hello & howdo' Jennifer? I have been reading your thread and you have a great studio which clearly produces fantastic results in the real world already. I really like how much daylight you have in there; in my experience that makes a huge difference to how pleasant a space is to work in. Cheers...

Re: Double Garage design - East Sussex
Congrats on the math you did for the HVAC! That's a really good example for others to follow. First-time studio builders often don't realize how important this is! But you certainly did. :thu: I concur. I'm just applying your calculations to my place. It's pretty much there, although I still haven'...

Re: Architects and churches...
Among other issues, I imagine the lensing effect of that curve would put a terrible amount of instrument spill into the vocal mic, and the same would happen with the sound coming from the vocal monitor wedge? Feedback city. And then the slapback from the rear wall will return and get lensed into the...

Re: Attic Shaped Studio
Still playing catch-up on Jennifer's epic post! ;) And I can't thank you enough for doing so. My initial post was absolutely the peak of my abilities after months of study and planning, I couldn't see any way to develop the design further with any certainty. You've already pushed it way beyond that...

Re: Attic Shaped Studio
As you say, isolating room 2 a bit more will help. I reckon some batwing gasket style seals and a drop seal in the room 2 door, like I have to room 1, will solve this sufficiently. Take a look at Zero International for that type of thing. They have a bunch of seals specifically designed for studio ...

Re: Amazing mixes in bad rooms??
Very true. I've experienced a similar effect in good, well organised live rooms with predictable acoustic properties. No need to spend a long time hunting around for sweet spots for performer and mic. And if you and / or the talent wish to spend time on sounds, it's about details and fine tuning. Ve...

Re: Amp Riser Effectiveness
:-) The more I think about it, the better the 3 dB reduction from the riser seems. Presumably the only sound transmission the riser can affect is that done via direct coupling to the solid structure and components of the house. It will have no effect on sound transmission through other means - such ...

Genelec 8030a: Nice! I like those. Should be a good match for your room as well. And they can be flush-mounted! :) More on that later... I really like them too, so that is good news :-) Monitor bass tilt is not applied - there is some boost above flat but I like it. My mixes are not light on bass s...

Re: Attic Shaped Studio
Thank you for the swift and very enlightening reply Stuart. It's incredibly helpful. I'll post some answers now, hopefully it won't interrupt your flow of posts. First, a quick mention of isolation: You aren't getting much within the house, which is understandable, and improving that considerably wo...

Re: Amazing mixes in bad rooms??
I remember reading this very article. Steven Wilson does fantastic work, and is highly respected in the prog rock world, with its many devotees of surround mixes - an audience with very high standards. There are several quotes from him in the article that confirm extensive use of headphones to refer...

For sure, I'll try some other things out when I get the proper insulation for it. I'll start saving the egg cartons now, and how about that giant bubblewrap over there I was going to throw in the bin...
